Developmental Editing

Developmental editing focuses on the big-picture elements of novel writing, such as plot, characterisation, pacing and genre expectations. It’s usually the first step in the editing process.

My developmental edit includes an editorial report and in-document comments with specific comments/suggestions.

My editorial report:

  • provides insight into fiction theory and genre expectations

  • discusses historical believability (whether your story makes sense for the period), theme, dialogue and inner monologue, and voice/tone/style

  • looks out for instances of head-hopping or possible issues of offence

  • analyses plot, structure, pacing, characterisation and scene versus summary (show, don’t tell)

My editorial report is not:

  • ghostwriting

  • line editing

  • copy editing

  • proofreading

Developmental editing is for you if:

  • You feel you need help with the big-picture elements of novel writing.

  • You want professional feedback on an early draft of your manuscript.

  • You need some guidance.

Developmental editing typically requires substantial rewriting. However, the contents of my editorial report are suggestions based on my research and knowledge of fiction theory. Ultimately, it’s your book, and you can choose which (if any) of my suggestions you accept.

Testimonials

  • Erin reviewed, proofread and edited several of my books, and I have no hesitation in recommending her work, which resulted in the publication of all my novels.

    W G Graham

  • The book was edited relatively quickly, and I was sent an editorial report outlining the changes she suggested and stating what worked in the book, and how the book would look like if I used her suggestions. The report also said why she recommended the things she did, as readers may need clarification about these parts of the story. Erin also sent me the edits in the manuscript, which were easy to understand and things I would not have thought of. I’m grateful for her editorial help! The report she sent was thorough and detailed. She is easy to work with and knows how to elevate your novel.
